Shuko – 手虎 “tiger hand”
Shuko are also called Tekagi Shuko and hand claws and were used in close combat fighting and for climbing. They can also be used as defense from other weapons, i.e. catching, deflecting, or relieving an opponent of their weapon. This is a smaller weapon so many hours of practice are needed to develop the timing necessary for mastery. Ashiko are spiked bands worn on the feet over shoes or other footwear to match shuko worm on the hands.
The origins of the shuko are unclear. This weapon was not revealed as a part of the ninja’s arsenal for many years and for obvious reasons of stealth and secrecy. The early version of this weapon were spiked metal bands that were tied to the hands. These metal bands most likely came from some other available tool that was adapted for their use. This is the essence of Ninjutsu, to adapt and survive by any means necessary. Car keys or other weapons can be substituted for shuko in close combat situations, but not so much for climbing.
